Speak Up - Flow Motion Media's Chance to Talk Back
In the wake of shooting the music video for ‘Space Hustler’, the Flow Motion crew was given the opportunity to visit a couple of local schools to give students a glimpse into our experience in the film production business. Heritage Middle School was our first stop, and we found ourselves in the presence of students who are passionate about film in some capacity. We were lead to Heritage as a result of trying to find a school to shoot one key scene of the music video in.
Here’s some background: ‘Space Hustler’ is our latest music video project, and it’s a journey into outer space seen through the imaginative eye of a child. Thanks to the helpful cooperation of the school, we found a location that fit the look we wanted perfectly. This video is set to be released very soon (at the time of this writing), so keep your eyes on our Facebook page to see its release!
But enough advertising. Let’s give some credit to the youngsters. The experience of giving students a look into what we’ve been able to achieve was truly a blast, and an eye opener. We were greeted by a group of students that showed great interest and enthusiasm in the ideas of being able to create their own music videos, and even films one day. We heard from students who had dabbled with editing, creating youtube channels, and even writing jingles for fictional ad campaigns. We showed them some of our previous music video work and gave them the low down on the steps we’ve had to take to get where we are.
Our second stop was Thornton Fractional South High School. Another potential option as a location for the music video shoot, Thornton Fractional South invited us to come speak to their TV/Film Club. These students came to school on a Saturday just to hear from us! There was a lot of talk on how to secure locations (how appropriate), editing techniques, and the distribution of short films. We were also happy to stress one very important thing to both of these groups: if you are on a set, be it a commercial, music video, or a film, always give it your all no matter what position you’re in. No production would benefit from having zero Production Assistants on call. Even if you’re on the low end of the totem pole in terms of a production team, it’s no reason to not give it your all.
A little bit of public speaking practice never hurt anyone, and in fact, this was a breath of fresh air for us. To share our experiences with people who are a few years away from potentially following a similar path was it’s own reward. Our efforts have given us a chance to give back and hopefully give insight into the ever changing media field. These students clearly have ambitions and ideas. We look forward to the future competition.
