Bimodal - A One Take Experiment with the Palmer Squares
Here’s an idea, get a couple of talented rappers, a big hangar, a projector, and a great beat. What kind of visual lunacy can you make from that? When all these ingredients came into our hands, we molded them into ‘Bimodal’.
The Palmer Squares originally made a name for themselves partly with their one-take videos on YouTube. Still keeping up the tradition, the Squares came together once again in front of our cameras to unleash a new one-take that allows the rap duo to spit at two different speeds and styles.
We’ve been fortunate to collaborate with Fort Knox Studios in using their Hangar space to build sets and shoot all manner of content within the past few months. This one-take performance was a way to cut loose and try something else. So what exactly entails a “one-take”? You may hear someone refer to a one-take as a cypher as well. A cypher is typically referring to someone freestyle rapping; the lyrics are being mace up on the spot and coming straight from the brain. A one-take rap performance doesn’t necessarily mean the lyrics are being created right then and there. For this one-take and many others that the Squares have released, the lyrics were in fact premeditated and memorized. But this wasn’t doe with months of preparation. This was a sudden blast of creativity that we made happen in the span of a couple of days.
By “we”, I mean the Flow Motion team and the Palmer Squares included. On our end, we played around with how we could create a more colorful scene in our dark Hangar space using fog and projections. On the other end, the Squares were hard at work writing lyrics and finding the right flows that would accompany the beat. This is why the Squares have become such heavy collaborators with us. Whether it's a massive music video or a one-take ditty, Term K and Acumental bring their A-game and continue to prove that they are on their way to being household names in rap.
